…Reveals why he’s negotiating with bandits
Zamfara State governor, Bello Matawalle, says less than 6,000 troops in operation in Zamfara and other Northern states are insufficient to battle about 30,000 bandits in the area.
The Governor spoke through the newly appointed State Commissioner for information, Ibrahim Dosara, at a news briefing in Kaduna yesterday.
Recall that some North-Western States, including Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina, Kaduna, Kebbi, and Niger states in the North-Central have been ravaged by activities of bandits in recent times.
The governor also revealed why he is negotiating with bandits terrorising the State.
Matawalle said there are almost 30,000 bandits in 100 camps spread across the forests of Zamfara and five of its neighboring states.
According to him, the bandits had killed 2,619 people, kidnapped 1,190 others and collected over N970 million ransoms between 2011 and 2019, in Zamfara alone.
Matawalle disclosed that his government chose the peace pact with the bandits to stop the wanton waste of innocent citizens’ lives and property.
