The Super Eagles yesterday defeated seven-time champions, Egyptian Pharaohs, 1-0, to begin their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), campaign at the Roumdé Adjia Stadium, Garoua, in Cameroon.
Leicester forward, Kelechi Iheanacho, scored the only goal of the match in the 30th minute to put Nigeria on top of the log in Group ‘D’, with three points.
The Eagles have not only neutralised Pharaohs of Egypt’s danger man, Mohammed Salah, but have also so far outplayed the seven-time African champions.
From the onset of the match, Moses Simon was a thorn in the flesh of the Egyptians and one of his daring moves on the left flank ended in goal when Joe Aribo found ‘Senior Man’ Kelechi Iheanacho, who fired home a fierce left-footer into the net to break the deadlock in the 30th minute.
The impressive Eagles sustained the tempo and wasted several other chances to score.
Egypt’s captain, Mo Salah, was silent throughout the match managing only a shoot at the goalpost.
Following their 1-0 win against Egypt on Tuesday, Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen praised his Nigerian teammates. Writing on Twitter, he urged his colleagues to build on the win ahead of their next group game against Sudan this weekend.
Meanwhile, the Super Eagles interim coach, Austin Eguavoen, has said he will remain the boss ahead of the new permanent handler of the team, Jose Peseiro.
Peseiro will take over from Eguavoen after the Cameroon tournament. The Portuguese was appointed as Gernot Rohr’s successor just before the tournament kicked-off.
Although Eguavoen will be in charge of the Nigerian team, Peseiro is expected to watch as an observer.
