Bandits storm Kaduna Airport, kill staff

As explosion injures two in Igabi LGA

Bandits stormed Kaduna airport yesterday and stopped an aircraft from taking off.

It was gathered that the aircraft was scheduled for Lagos yesterday, when the hoodlums stormed the runaway forcing the officials of the airline and passengers to run for safety.

According to a source, who preferred anonymity, disclosed that a staff of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) was also shot and killed by the bandits.

Even though news about the shooting of the airport staff is still scanty but it was learnt that the deceased was shot around the runway by one of the bandits.

It was gathered that the aircraft, which was billed to take off at 12.30 pm yesterday, could not because of the presence of the bandits around the runway of the airport. More than 10 military trucks were reportedly been deployed to the airport to reinforce the security network around the airport.

Recall that last year, bandits stormed the staff quarters located within the vicinity of the airport and kidnapped 10 staff of FAAN and NAMA.

The security agencies of the airport are yet to react at the time of filing the report.

In a related development, security agencies reported that a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was detonated around Yazufa Junction, Hayin Danmani, Igabi LGA, after it was allegedly planted on a motorcycle belonging to a POS operator in the area, one Mohammed Hassan.

The State’s Commissioner, Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, an issued statement yesterday, said that according to preliminary investigations, Hassan, at the close of business, went to pick up his motorcycle where it was parked close to his shop, and upon starting the motorcycle, it exploded.

The explosion resulted in serious injuries to Hassan and a yet-unidentified passer-by. There was also damage to the roof of a nearby structure.

Personnel of the Police anti-bomb squad arrived at the scene to remove the debris. They also disabled a second device found planted in the motorcycle. The injured duo are receiving treatment, in a medical facility as investigations proceed.

Aruwan said, “Gov. Nasir el-Rufa’i expressed shock and sadness at the report, and wished the injured persons a speedy recovery. He reiterated calls for increased vigilance by citizens to the threat of explosives being placed by terrorists to cause harm and destruction”.

The statement added that investigations are ongoing into the incident.
