Buhari orders release of 40,000 metric tonnes of grains to less-privileged Nigerians

Summons Agric Minister

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the immediate release of 40,000 metric tonnes of assorted grains from the Strategic Grains Reserve, (SGR), to assist less-privileged Nigerians to celebrate the forthcoming Easter and Sallah festivities.

This was made known by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Muhammad Mahmood Abubakar, while briefing State House Correspondents after a closed-door meeting with President Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, yesterday.

The president’s action is expected to help reduce the impact of the high prices of grains in the market on the affected people.

Mahmood, who said he was summoned by the president and directed to disburse the commodities to the affected people, said that 12,000 out of the 40,000 approved tonnes will be allocated to the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development by the ministry for distribution to internally-displaced persons across the country.

The minister said the distribution will be done along the model used in the height of the Covid-19 lockdown, adding that the assorted grains to be released from silos across the five geo-political zones in the country will include sorghum, maize and millet.

The Minister affirmed that insecurity in parts of the country will affect food production but assured that everything necessary is being done to ensure that cultivation continues in other places.

He also debunked claims that suggested that the South has not received equal attention with the North from the Federal Government in terms of support for agriculture.
