Suspected bandits have reportedly killed at least 15 worshippers at a mosque in Ruwan-Jema town in Bukkuyum LGA, Zamfara State.
According to a publication focused on the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, the bandits attacked the mosque during the Juma’ah prayers on Friday.
The bandits were said to have opened fire on the worshippers after invading the town on motorcycles, and many worshippers were said to have sustained injuries during the mosque attack, the publication quoted a source as saying.
The incident happened amid the recent military bombardment of bandits’ hideouts in Zamfara and other parts of northern Nigeria.
This is not the first time insurgents will launch attacks on worshippers during prayers in Mosques in Zamfara. Recall that on September 2, gunmen invaded a mosque in Zugu community, also in Zamfara State, and abducted many worshippers. The gunmen, who were similarly disguised as worshippers, attacked the central mosque in Zugu town, also in Bukkuyum LGA.
A resident, AbdulKarim Bilyaminu, also reportedly said the deputy Chief Imam was among those abducted by the gunmen.
The Zamfara State Police Command’s spokesman, Mohammed Shehu, did not respond to calls and messages sent to him as of the time of filing this report.
