Kano: “Show evidence of paying Zakkat before contesting elections” – Task Force to politicians

The Director-General, Kano State Zakkat and Hisbah Commission, Safiyanu Abubakar, has said that plans are in motion to institute a compulsory payment of Zakkat by all politicians before contesting any election in the State.

Abubakar stated this yesterday in his office, while inaugurating an 11-man task force committee for the collection of Zakkat in the State.

According to him, the action is a deliberate move to help the needy in the State. “The State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, in his effort to alleviate the suffering of less-privileged, the poor and the disabled, approved our appointment to lead the committee”, he said.

Abubakar further explained that the Commission had come up with a new method of collection with enforcement, which every wealthy individual must pay his Zakkat.

“Members of State House of Assembly, especially the religious affairs committee, has sat, discussed and given us the mandate to collect Zakkat.

“As a committee, we are trying to institute a stand that anyone seeking to contest any election in the State must present evidence that he or she has been paying Zakkat to the commission”, he further stated.
