New York governor, Cuomo, resigns over accusations of sexual harassment

The United States (US) Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, had resigned his office after accusations of sexual harassment was confirmed by an investigation he ordered.

The independent investigation by the New York Attorney-General’s office found that Cuomo, 63, sexually harassed multiple women, prompting efforts to remove him.

Cuomo, who had been facing pressure to resign from fellow Democrats, including President Joe Biden,  is the third New York governor in a row to leave office under a cloud of scandal.

Just a year ago, he was basking in adulation as millions of Americans tuned in daily to his no-nonsense televised briefings on the coronavirus pandemic.

Lt.-Governor Kathy Hochul will become the first woman to lead New York State.

However, many observers in Nigeria said Cuomo’s misconduct may have been insignificant, in comparison to his peers in our clime, with some saying he is still a ‘learner’, and that his misdeeds lack the brazenness and unalloyed commitment our politicians devote to their vices.

Recall that in 2016, the then US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, wrote to the National Assembly accusing members of the House of Representatives of attempted rape and solicitation of prostitutes while on an official trip to the US.
