Ø Begins investigation
The Police, in Lagos, have said they will investigate the molestation and harassment of peaceful protesters arrested on Saturday at Lekki Tollgate.
This was contained in a statement released yesterday by its spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
Adejobi said the Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, has condemned the molestation of the protesters which was shown in a viral video and promised an immediate investigation.
Recall that some of the protesters arrested at Lekki Tollgate including popular comedian, Mr Macaroni were stripped off their clothes, with some having marks on their bodies due to harassment by Police officers. Several groups, including the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Youths Digit Campaign (YRC) and Corporate Accountability and Public Advocacy Africa (CAPPA), have condemned the arrest and dehumanisation of the protesters.
According to the Lagos Police chief, Mr.Odumosu, an immediate investigation would be instituted on the ‘molestation’ of arrested protesters.
Meanwhile, an aide to President Muhammadu Buhari, Mrs. Lauretta Onochie, has commended the Police over the way it handled the protest in Lagos on Saturday. In a tweet yesterday, Mrs Onochie gave kudos to the police, saying nobody was hurt during the protest.
However, the Minister of Defence, Maj-Gen. Bashir Magashi (rtd), has said over 60 percent of those who participated in the #EndSARS protests don’t know why they participated in the demonstrations and that some of them are rogues and thieves.
