…Calls for respect of legal process in land disputes
The Independent Broadcasting Association of Nigeria, (IBAN), has strongly criticized the River State Government for its demolition of Daar Communications PLC’s building and equipment, which houses African Independent Television (AIT) and Raypower, on Monday, September 4, 2023.
In a press statement issued yesterday by the Chairman of IBAN, Guy Murray-Bruce, the association condemned the actions of the Rivers State Government, labeling it as “self-help,” “illegal,” and “an abuse of the legal order.” IBAN noted that the land dispute between Daar Communications Plc and the Rivers State Government is currently under litigation in a court of competent jurisdiction, making the government’s actions prejudicial to the democratic process.
IBAN expressed its concern that the demolition appears to be an attempt to intimidate and silence the media, which plays a crucial role as the watchdog of society.
The association called on the Rivers State Government to halt any further actions and allow the judicial process to take its course in resolving the land dispute. IBAN emphasised the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring that democratic institutions and freedom of the press are protected.
