Supreme Court Okays use of hijab in Lagos public schools

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has granted the use of hijab by female Muslim students in Lagos State Government-owned schools. The apex court delivered the ruling upholding the use of hijab by Muslim students on Thursday in Abuja. The Kwara State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, (CAN), has denied that it agreed to the use of Hijab in the Christian schools by female students saying that it was forcefully imposed and implemented by the State government. The Kwara State government has compensated proprietors of missionary schools and church owners whose property was damaged in the wake of controversy over the wearing of hijab by students in the State. The Kwara State Teaching Service Commission, (TESCOM), has directed the principals, teachers and staff of the 10 schools shut down over the recent hijab controversy to report at the schools today, Friday or face disciplinary actions. The Kwara State Ministry of Education has reversed its decision to reopen the 10 grant-aided schools over hijab controversy. According to the Ministry’s permanent secretary, Kemi Adeosun, the schools earlier told to reopen on Monday, will remain shut.
