A group, Yoruba Appraisal Forum, YAF, has given stern warning to all those fomenting trouble under the guise of fighting for the freedom of the South-West to desist or risk the wrath of its millions of members across the region.
Speaking against the backdrop of the recent violence in Ibarapa town in Ibarapa Local Government Area of Oyo State, the YAF National Coordinator, Adesina Animashaun, in a statement titled, “Yoruba Appraisal Forum will resist vendors of violence in the South-West. Enough is enough!” warned that it would no longer tolerate any individual or group of persons in Yorubaland to carry out any violent plot in the South-West under the guise of hunting for criminals.
YAF vowed that it would no longer fold its hands and watch persons, groups and their collaborators pretending to be protecting the common interests of the people of the South-West “to further destroy the economic and social wellbeing of our people.”
YAF argued that the quit notice issued by some individuals, who are neither state actors nor security agents, to some other Nigerians living in the South-West, which resulted in the recent violence witnessed in some parts of the region, was uncalled for and unnecessary.
The Forum stated that the South-West had yet to recover from the huge losses it suffered during last year’s #EndSARS protests in which individuals and governments lost properties worth trillions of Naira in addition to the invaluable lives of Yoruba and people of other ethnic nationalities killed.
It noted that the masterminds of the recent violence in Ibarapa land had “a more sinister objective of destabilising the Nigerian nation for the selfish political end of their sponsors and paymasters, but merely covering up their agenda with the cloak of fighting for Yoruba freedom.”
YAF, therefore, challenged the police and other security agencies “to unmask both the local and foreign sponsors of these agents of violence.”
The Forum called on the police to take appropriate and urgent actions “to deal decisively with these individuals who are bent on fomenting trouble in the South-West” to nip their evil plans in the bud.
YAF further warned that it members would not hesitate to “confront those planning another wave of violence in any part of the South-West under the guise of hunting for criminal elements, because it’s an ill-wind that will blow no one any good.”
Below is the full text of YAF’s statement:
YORUBA APPRAISAL FORUM WILL RESIST VENDORS OF VIOLENCE IN THE SOUTH-WEST. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
The Yoruba Appraisal Forum has watched with keen interest and even with bated breath, the recent violent events unfolding in some states in our own South-West part of the country and we want to say we were not taken by surprise because we warned about such impending violent occurrences several times last year and even in January this year. But unfortunately, we were not taken seriously by the authorities and security agencies.
YAF want to state clearly that the quit notice to some Nigerians by some individuals in the South West, which resulted eventually in the recent violence, was uncalled for and unnecessary.
We foresaw and forewarned about this recent violence championed by some self-styled Yoruba freedom fighters.
But we want to warn again that the recent violence arising from the quit notice to some other Nigerians residing in Yorubaland by certain individuals was just the onset of the large scale and widespread violence already scheduled by those planning the eventual disintegration and dismemberment of the Nigerian nation, with the South-West as their launch pad. For them, that was just the beginning. May God frustrate all their evil plans for the South-West, Yorubaland and Nigeria at large. Amen!
We are aware that those behind the recent violence in Ibarapa, Oyo State, have a more sinister objective of destabilising the Nigerian nation for the selfish political end of their sponsors and paymasters, but merely covering up their agenda with the cloak of fighting for Yoruba freedom.
Intelligence reports at our disposal have indicated that the masterminds of this violence are bent on throwing Nigeria into total chaos to hasten the collapse of governments at both the state and Federal levels to enable them to execute their evil plans in Nigeria.
They are planning to take advantage of the current security challenges to wreak further havoc throughout the country, starting with the South-West and expecting to instigate reprisals against Southerners in the North with the ultimate objective of destabilising the country.
This is most irresponsible and unpatriotic! The police authorities and other security agencies must act now and waste no time in going after these hoodlums masquerading as freedom fighters in the South-West.
YAF want to challenge the security agencies to unmask both the local and foreign sponsors of these agents of violence.
Yorubaland is still grappling with the unimaginable aftermath of the last October #EndSARS protests. The large scale destruction in many parts of the South-West is still shocking to many Nigerians, as it remains unprecedented.
Remember that the huge losses recorded by the South-West in terms of burnt properties worth trillions of Naira, not to talk of invaluable human lives destroyed, due to the October 2020 violence that followed the #EndSARS protests are still fresh in the people’s minds and Yorubaland can no longer afford to lose more to the unpatriotic and evil activities of hoodlums masquerading as freedom fighters.
We, therefore, urge the police authorities to take appropriate and urgent steps to deal decisively with these individuals who are bent on fomenting trouble in the South-West. The police and other security agencies should not mind the disguised antics and plans of these shameless and unpatriotic youths. It is imperative the police and other security agencies take appropriate actions against them to nip their evil plans in the bud.
On our own part as YAF members, we want to once again sound a serious note of warning that we won’t allow any group or individuals to turn the South-West into a theatre of war. Any Yoruba who has collected money from both local and foreign sponsors to destabilise the South-West should retrace their steps to avoid the doom awaiting them.
But should they refuse to take this our modest advice to desist from their devilish plans and unpatriotic activities in Yorubaland, they should be prepared to face sanctions and consequences as we will no longer fold our hands and allow them and their collaborators to further destroy the economic and social well-being of our people while pretending to be protecting our common interests.
YAF won’t hesitate to mobilise all our members across Yorubaland to confront those planning another wave of violence in any part of the South-West under the guise of hunting for criminal elements, because it is an ill-wind that will blow no one any good.
We, therefore, advise the Yoruba individuals and groups concerned to immediately begin to resist the manipulation by their sponsors and paymasters, who have been emboldening them to continue to thread the path of destruction.
Long live YAF!
Long live Yorubaland!
Long live the Nigerian Federation!
